Here are seven ways to do your preparation for the month of Ramadan 2023 (1444 AH).

1. Reflect on Your Goals: Even before Ramadan starts, determine what you want to get out of it. Make a list of spiritual, physical, and personal goals you want to accomplish in these 30 days. This reflection will ensure that your time is procedurally planned out and focused.

2. Remove Distractions: Eliminate everything in your life preventing you from concentrating. These distractions can take any form such as TV, movies, video games, and so on. You should also try to limit the use of your phone and social media during the month of Ramadan.

3. Get into the right Frame of Mind: Fasting is a time to reconnect with Allah, purify our hearts, and show gratitude for all we have. During this time, we should be more conscious of our words and our behavior in addition to abstaining from food, drink, and subconscious wrongdoings.

4. Read the Quran: Before Ramadan, it is important to read and understand the Quran. Learning the chapters and their associated message will help us become conscious of our actions and increase our faith and love for Allah. This knowledge will also help us to discuss our faith with others and guide us to make better choices throughout the month.

5. Increase Your Good Deeds: Memorize the Surah Yasin and the Duas, donate to the poor and needy, give charity, visit the sick, and help the orphans. Ramadan is an opportune time to increase your good deeds and has more rewards credited to your list of achievements.

6. Seek Forgiveness: Ramadan is the time for repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah for our wrongs. Make sure to ask for Allah’s forgiveness before you enter into the blessed month.

7. Make Dua: Lastly, make special dua (supplication) to Allah asking for help in doing and benefiting from Ramadan. Pray for the strength to fast, the ability to increase in good deeds, and the reward of Paradise on the Day of Judgement.

These are some of the ways to prepare for Ramadan. Having the right mindset and practice is key to reaping the most out of Allah’s blessings this blessed month. Ramadan Mubarak!

BATTLE OF JOLO: WHAT HAPPENED LAST FEBRUARY 7, 1974

BATTLE OF JOLO - FEBRUARY 7, 1974: OUR NARRATIVE Algazelus This is our narrative. February 7, 1974, is a date that is etched in the minds of every Tausug, including myself, as a crucial turning point in our history. It marks the day when the town of Jolo, in Sulu, was burned down by government forces as part of their fight against the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). As a Tausug from Sulu, this event is not just a distant memory but a reality that still haunts us today. Despite being born years after the burning of Jolo, I have grown up listening to stories of the event from my elders and reading about it in history books. But it wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I fully understood the significance and impact of what happened on that fateful day. The burning of Jolo, also known as the siege of Jolo, was a military confrontation between the MNLF and the government of the Philippines. The MNLF, led by Nur Misuari, was fighting for the self-determination of the Bangsamoro people...

Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago: Home To A Diverse Farming And Fishing Industry

Algazelus 06.11.22 Thesis Statement: In the past few decades, the economy of the Muslim-inhabited Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines has been severely affected by climate change, deforestation, armed conflict, and the influx of foreign corporate-run fishing vessels. This has led to a decrease in the resources available to sustain their traditional coffee farming and fish harvesting industries, severely limiting the economic activities of the people living there and putting their livelihoods at risk. The Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines is home to a diverse farming and fishing industry. For the last few decades, the main source of income for the Muslim communities that inhabit these islands are coffee farming and fish harvesting and culturing. Despite their importance, these industries have been affected by various issues that have had a major impact on the lives of the people who depend on them. In today’s world, farmers and fish harvesting in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelag...
