Functioning as a main tenet in Islam, ‘Tawakkul’ is often referred to as self-control and trust in Allah. Tawakkul (Arabic for ‘Total Reliance on God’) shifts our focus to the Almighty and reminds us that only He is in control of the universe. It highlights that Allah alone is responsible for our destiny –– a fact that relieves a great part of stress from our lives and allows us to focus on our duties. It instructs us in the correct way to balance between relying on Allah and using our own means to achieve our desired objectives.

In Islam, the concept of Tawakkul involves an individual trusting in Allah and His infinite power, relinquishing worries, and relying on divine intervention to solve their issues. This eliminates our doubts and enhances our connection with Allah by enveloping the individual in a blanket of hope and assurance that He will help in our pursuits.

Tawakkul is not just limited to Muslims – it has been demonstrated many times in the Qur’an through the actions of those who believed in the Oneness of God. Prophets Ibrahim, Ibrahim, and others are perfect examples as they responded to all challenges by relying on and faithfully trusting in Allah. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds us that Allah will not abandon those who trust in Him.

Tawakkul is a prized talent that is developed over time and is attained only by those who trust in their chosen paths and persevere in their struggles. Such people are those who do not succumb to the temptation of shirking their responsibilities, instead placing their faith firmly upon Allah in various aspects of life such as travel, marriage, and acquiring sustenance.

Tawakkul is a journey - it starts with performing one’s duties sincerely and diligently, waiting for Allah’s mercy without being disappointed if the result perchance were not in one’s favor. In Islam, the human is only in charge of presenting the effort, and from thereon, it is solely upon Allah to determine the outcome of one’s deeds.

In conclusion, trusting in Allah by taking the path of Tawakkul is not only an integral part of Islam but the essence of all human spirituality. As many of us worry about our future, Tawakkul reminds us to never give in to despair but to remain rightful and obedient to Allah no matter what the outcome.

Experiencing the Country's Best Coffee – A Review of the Library Coffee + Study

Algazelus 06.27.23 The latest addition to the list of famed coffee shops in the city of Zamboanga is no other than the Library Coffee + Study . This particular coffee shop is remarkable for providing both coffee and study services. On one end, they have separate rooms perfect for group study, and on the other, an array of ample space for individuals who prefer some peace and quiet while they study. Recently, I visited the Library Coffee + Study to have a sip of their specialty coffee and learn more about the character of this place. Prior to my visit, however, I was told that they serve an array of coffees ranging from iced cappuccino to hot Americano. My thirst for hot Americano, however, was long overdue and I was eager to take a seat and dig in. I have tasted several americanos in a range of coffee shops, if I may add, and this particular experience promised to bruise my expectations. It turns out, the barista who served me informed me that they use imported arabica coffee bea...

Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago: Home To A Diverse Farming And Fishing Industry

Algazelus 06.11.22 Thesis Statement: In the past few decades, the economy of the Muslim-inhabited Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines has been severely affected by climate change, deforestation, armed conflict, and the influx of foreign corporate-run fishing vessels. This has led to a decrease in the resources available to sustain their traditional coffee farming and fish harvesting industries, severely limiting the economic activities of the people living there and putting their livelihoods at risk. The Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines is home to a diverse farming and fishing industry. For the last few decades, the main source of income for the Muslim communities that inhabit these islands are coffee farming and fish harvesting and culturing. Despite their importance, these industries have been affected by various issues that have had a major impact on the lives of the people who depend on them. In today’s world, farmers and fish harvesting in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelag...

BATTLE OF JOLO: WHAT HAPPENED LAST FEBRUARY 7, 1974

BATTLE OF JOLO - FEBRUARY 7, 1974: OUR NARRATIVE Algazelus This is our narrative. February 7, 1974, is a date that is etched in the minds of every Tausug, including myself, as a crucial turning point in our history. It marks the day when the town of Jolo, in Sulu, was burned down by government forces as part of their fight against the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). As a Tausug from Sulu, this event is not just a distant memory but a reality that still haunts us today. Despite being born years after the burning of Jolo, I have grown up listening to stories of the event from my elders and reading about it in history books. But it wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I fully understood the significance and impact of what happened on that fateful day. The burning of Jolo, also known as the siege of Jolo, was a military confrontation between the MNLF and the government of the Philippines. The MNLF, led by Nur Misuari, was fighting for the self-determination of the Bangsamoro people...
